Some people say that we are an extension of our art. I tend to disagree. We are the creators, the finders, the architects. We are the vessel and our art flows through us.

Being an artist is a deeply intimate, rooted experience fueled by passion and a drive to be all consumed by creation. There is undoubtedly a strong link between what we create and who we are, but that doesn’t mean that what we create is who we are.

You are not your art. Your art is a reflection of you and your experiences.

We must have experiences to create art.

I always thought that who I am as an artist and the type of music I create had to determine the way that I live my life. The truth is, that side of me deserves to be explored fully, but so do the other parts of me; who I am as a daughter, a friend, a sister, a lover, and who I am when no one else is around.

Who are you as an artist? How do you want to be perceived aside from those other parts of yourself? This is where branding comes in. Taking the parts of you that align with your creative message, expand it, write it down, and live by it when working on and living in your career. Not outside of it.

It’s easy to slip and start seeing yourself as a product if you’re focused on living and breathing as one.

I am a strong believer in being all-in when it comes to your music, but there is a distinct possibility of beginning to view your self worth based on how it is received. If the music does well, great! But, not all releases or shows go the way we want them to. Maintaining a well-built sense of self outside of your music helps to soften any blows, and makes the wins that much sweeter.

Balance is key. Start indulging the other parts of your life. Spend time with loved ones, and spend time doing things you love separate from music. Exploring those other parts of yourself will create a stronger image of who you are leading to evolution in all aspects of your life, including your art.

There is so much beauty held in the creative endeavors we all know and love, and it will inevitably seep through into the other sections of our lives. Create, embrace, and hold space for it, but don’t drown yourself out.
