Everyone’s life has a soundtrack. We all have those songs that just seem to have connected with you on some other level, these are the songs that serve to remind us of people in our lives, events gone by, eras, good times, bad times - you know, typical soundtrack stuff, but immensely personal and unique for each being.

A dream of any musician is to have your creation connect with someone, and it doesn’t have to make their life’s soundtrack, but it could occupy the repeat button for a few days, maybe add it to a playlist, get Shazammed, like it, favourite it, buy it, stream it, hell, steal it for all we care - as long as you’re listening and digging it.

When someone reaches out to say they like a song, it feels pretty damned good. A rush of vindication and validation for all that time spent writing, composing, recording, re-recording, re-recording, re-recording (how much space do I have here?), for the tears, the sweat, the anguish and all the late nights and the hundreds of hours poured into a song… summed up in some strangers brief DM; “I love that song.”

So, there’s nothing more annoying than shady marketers dressing up as fans, behaving like fans for a brief interaction in the DMs (even calling me ‘fam’), only to pitch some backdoor marketing campaign that’s gonna take me to new heights all for a limited time, special low rate!

Now, I’ve never taken any of these offers up, so I can’t really offer any opinion on how or if they work, other than their method rubs me the wrong way. This tactic is disruptive, and not in a good Silicon Valley way.

Let's face it, there’s no shortage of ways to spend money when you're a musician. And, I'm just talking about the legitimate expenses you incur in sending your creation to the world. We put all that aside each night, as we slide into our DMs and it’s time to to connect and engage with fans. It’s fan time, we’re really not looking to improve our SEO or drive our metrics, we just wanna be told how cool we are and how awesome our music is, ok? (also, if the song resonated with someone, it’s nice to hear that too!)

I wish there were a filter to weed these grifters out, hmmm, maybe that’s one good thing AI can do to benefit this industry? Until then, remember your first 100 followers on any platform are always your friends, family and people who want to sell you something.

Like Kevin Nealon’s character in Happy Gilmore said, “Oh yeah. Lotta pressure. You gotta rise above it. You gotta harness in the good energy, block out the bad. Harness. Energy. Block. Bad.”
