Your first tour is exciting. It's also the moment you discover everything you forgot to bring. I learned most of my packing lessons the hard way, somewhere between a gas station at 2 a.m. and a venue with no store in sight.

Here's the list I wish someone had handed me before my first run of dates.

## The golden rule: pack light

Space in the van is precious, and you'll be carrying everything in and out of hotels, venues and vehicles every single day. One main bag and one small day bag per person is plenty. If you're debating whether to bring something, leave it home.

## Documents and money

- Passport or government ID, plus photocopies or photos of both stored separately
- Any travel or work paperwork you need if you're crossing a border. Check the requirements well before you leave.
- Health card and any insurance information
- A debit card, a credit card and some cash in small bills
- A printed itinerary with venue addresses, load-in times and contact numbers

## Your instrument and equipment essentials

- Spare strings, sticks, drumheads, reeds or whatever your instrument goes through
- Extra cables, adapters and a spare power supply
- A small tool kit: screwdrivers, Allen keys, pliers, tuner, gaffer tape
- In-ear monitors or earplugs, and a backup pair
- Labels with your name and phone number on every case

## Clothing

- Stage clothes, kept separate so they stay clean and ready
- Comfortable clothes for driving, load-ins and days off
- Layers. Venues are hot, vans are cold, and the weather changes city to city.
- Sturdy, comfortable shoes for load-ins, plus whatever you wear on stage
- Enough underwear and socks to get you to the next laundromat
- A rain jacket

## Health and comfort

- Any medication you take, with enough to last the whole tour
- A basic first-aid kit: bandages, pain reliever, antacids, throat lozenges
- A refillable water bottle
- Healthy snacks for the long drives
- A travel pillow, eye mask and earplugs for sleeping anywhere
- Hand sanitizer and a small toiletry kit

## Tech

- Phone, chargers and a long charging cable
- A portable battery pack
- A small power bar. Outlets are always in short supply.
- Backup copies of your tracks, click files or show files

## The business side

- A card reader and a cash float if you're selling merch
- Copies of contracts or booking confirmations
- Set lists, plus a few spares
- A notebook for tracking expenses, contacts and the people you meet

## The little things that make a big difference

- A day bag with everything you need for the next 24 hours, so you're not digging through the van
- A headlamp or small flashlight for dark load-ins
- Laundry bags to keep dirty clothes separate
- Something that reminds you of home

## The bottom line

Nobody packs perfectly for their first tour. But if you bring your documents, protect your instrument, take care of your health and keep it light, you'll handle almost anything the road throws at you.

And whatever you forget, you'll remember to pack next time.
